For The 1964-1972 Chevelle Enthusiast

Book #3 - Chevelle SS Definitive Guide

With my second book getting wrapped up, I was asked to do a third book. The Chevelle SS Definitive Guide (working title) is now being written. No cover has been designed yet so the image on the right is a montage of 1964-1972 Chevelles and El Caminos.

This 8.5 x 11 book will be more of a coffee-table design with a projected 450 color and b/w photos.

As of this date, September 21, 2016, the book is still in its design and research stage so details are sketchy about its final content. I already have the first chapters on 1964 & 1965 Chevelles out for peer review. Basically for each year this outline will be followed:

1964-1972 Chevelle SS Definitive Guide Outline

All chapters will follow the same general outline structure for content and images of components where available and applicable.

  • A short introduction to each model year depicting styles changes (beginning with 1965) and general comparisons to other GM division A-body offerings - Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac.
  • Chevelle VIN
  • Available Series and Body Styles
  •  Exterior Trim Levels with examples for the various series
  •  Interior Trim Levels/Colors with examples
  •  Exterior Paint Colors; trim tag codes, sales name , etc.
  •  Driveline
    • Engine Sizes: availability by series, horsepower, and torque specs
    • Transmission/Clutch types
    •  Rear Axle Ratios and identification
    •  Chassis/Brakes specs
    •  Wheel Covers/Hub Caps/Tires as applicable
    •  Fisher Body Number Plate
    •  Examples from each plant depicting formats, codes, and changes with description of those formats, codes, and changes where applicable
  • Appendices
    • A - U.S. Assembly Plants
    • B - GM of Canada
    • C - Group Codes
    • D - Component Date Codes
    • Others as applicable...

If I can convince my publisher of the value, there will be extensive explanations of all the years Fisher Body Number Plates as well. You will probably discover some things on these "trim tags" you never knew. Canadian-built Chevelles will also be discussed in their own appendix with differences as applicable.

While I cannot offer any monetary compensation for images used, you will receive photo credits where applicable and your name along with the images used. If you have/had a professional photographer take the images submitted you must either (1) get full permission to release those images for publication or (2) have the photographer sign and date the photo release form. In the case of option #2, both you and the photographer will be noted.

Some minor cropping may be done for publication and license plates will be pixelated for privacy reasons but these will be done by the publisher. Just your raw photos are needed. If you have a number of large file size images to send I recommend an online service at http://wetransfer.com. It is free; you just supply the recipient's email address and navigate to the images you wish to send. You will receive an email from them when the transfer is done and when I download them. This is how I send all my images to my publisher as email attachments can get 'compressed' to some degree. Links to images you have on a photo sharing site do not generally work well, it is better if you send me the images themselves.

Submitted Photo Requirements

As usual photos of your car should be taken with a quality digital camera with a photo size of at least 2000 pixels wide with as good a dots per inch (dpi) resolution as your camera allows and with a background that does not distract from the car such as photos of your car at a car show in display form, in a driveway with garage door open, etc. These just really won't work. Hood, trunk, and doors should be closed. Convertibles are fine with top up or down and windows can be open or closed. Let's see some good pictures of your Chevelle!

The deadline on this effort is June of 2017 so there is a lot of time to research, prepare, change my mind, etc. on this book but get those photos in early if you can.

Always on the lookout for quality, high resolution images of 64-72 Chevelles for this effort. If you have a good candidate, get in touch with me via my Contact link at the top of each page.

Stay tuned for updates as they develop.

All 1964-1972 El Caminos are welcomed as well, especially 1968 SS396 and 1969-1972 SS optioned El Caminos. I'm also considering using quality images of Buick, Olds, and Pontiac A-body cars as comparisons for each year. So, if you or a friend has a 1964-1972 Buick (prefer GS), Olds (prefer 442), or Pontiac (Prefer GTO), have them consider contacting me.

Buick

Oldsmobile

Pontiac
